Okay, today we're going to talk about... The first question is, what was the result or the penalty of Adam's sin and fall? Okay? That's the first thing we're going to talk about. Now, when God created Adam, which we talked about last week, and the likeness of God, He put him in a garden, and gave him the garden to tend, and he gave him dominion over the creation, this creation. And Adam was of such a character that God even allowed him to name the animals, and he was in charge, and he had a job. He was tending, taking care of the creation. But then God told him that there were two trees in the garden, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life, And he restricted him. He said, don't eat the fruit of this tree, because in the day that you do, what will happen?

You will surely die. So the answer to the question is you will die. Well, what does that mean? Death means separation. So what got separated from what? Adam got separated from God. In what respect? Spiritually. So Adam, does everybody in this room believe that and understand that Adam is a He's a three-part person? He's soul, spirit, and body? Because some believers think that human beings are souls and bodies, not spirits. But Adam's spirit, soul, and body, what was the function of his spirit before he fell? No, the function of his spirit, the function of it.

Why did he have one? To make his fellowship with God. That's the link. So when he sins, there's a separation that happens there, right? So he has no spiritual communication with God, right? He has communication with him because God came into the garden and said, Adam, where are you? And Adam said, well, we're hiding. So there was communication between them, but there was no spiritual connection, right? How many deaths were there? There are two. He died spiritually immediately and then 900 and some years later he died physically.

What's the soul? Good question. Let's distinguish between the soul and the spirit. Anybody want to take a shot at that one? your intellect, and your will. And it is kind of, if you didn't have a soul, I think you'd have a difficult time interacting. Be bold. Come on in. Got a chair back there. You have to sit out here. Don't forget. Jessica, don't forget your keys. OK. We're talking about soul and spirit, so if your soul is that, and it has the, it can be influenced by your body, it can be influenced by the environment that it's around, what are the properties, or what does the spirit look like?

Does it have a will? Does the spirit have a will? So you've got two wills? No, we've got two wills. How do you mean? Well, the spirit is the communication. the connection with God, and directs, it leads, doesn't it? Okay. In a perfect world. In a perfect world, which it was at that point.

Angels had wills, right? And they're spirits, and at some point in their existence, God gave all of them the ability to exercise their will. They did, and now they're fixed. exercise them anymore. Gee, those guys aren't free. Boy, isn't that a tragedy. So the fallen angels, their wills are fixed. And the elect angels, their wills are fixed. So, does your spirit have the ability to, human spirit have the ability to exercise will? Or is it your soul? It can exercise will for or against God. I'm of the opinion that it's your soul that does that.

Because if you read the account of Genesis, when Eve sinned, not Adam, because it doesn't give you a lot of... But if you watch what Satan did to Eve, what did he try to do? What was the first thing he tried to do? Doubt. No, no. Think about it. Think about it. What's the very first thing? Let's take a look. Yeah, he tries to get her to focus, right? Genesis... Genesis chapter 3. Now watch how he does this, verse 1.

Now the serpent was more subtle than any of the beasts of the field which the Lord had made. And he said unto the woman, the serpent did, Hath God said you shall not eat of every tree of the garden? So he asked her a question that he already knows the answer to, but he's asking her a question to get her engaged with him. And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden, but of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge, the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said you shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. And the serpent said unto the woman, You shall not surely die.

So James is right. The first shot is, wait a minute, God's not telling you the straight here. See? For God knows that in the day of your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as God, knowing good and evil. Has he ever used this ploy before or after? I mean, he used this same ploy on the Lord Jesus, and this is the same ploy that got him to be his God. Isn't that it? Okay. Now, here's what I want you to look at.

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, so he gets her to look at it, and to observe it, and to, you know, sort of contemplate about it. Huh? Yeah, to get her to focus on the tree, on the fruit. So she looked at it and said, well, gee, you know, the fruit looks terrific. It's probably good for food. And that it was pleasant to the eyes. A tree to be desired to make one wise. Look at the attributes this tree has. Man, this is really something. So she took the fruit thereof and did eat, and gave unto her husband with her, and he did eat too.

So notice what he did. He got her to focus. What focused on that tree? Had to be her soul. Because look, you see the responses? She saw it. She took in what she saw. And she made some judgments about what she saw. What made the judgments? Her soul did. Did it not? The soul is the thing that makes judgments about its environment. The spirit doesn't do that. The spirit gets direct revelation from God and that's it. He's got it.

See? Does your spirit have a memory? What do you think? Have you ever thought about that? Does your spirit have a memory? Which means you've got to memorize scripture? No, your spirit doesn't. The Holy Spirit gives you a direct revelation. He doesn't give it to your memory. He gives it to your spirit and it's there. It's there. Now your soul's memory may not be able to call it to mind, but let me give you an example. All of us have scriptures that are in our minds that we readily recall in conversation that was revealed to us through the study of the Word that has a particular application to our life, right?

And we've never forgotten that scripture because it spoke to us clearly and emphatically about, you know, like my favorite scripture, 2 Corinthians 3.18, when the Lord showed me what that meant, I didn't have to memorize it. It's there. Is that true of you? I know you have spent a lot of time memorizing scripture, and not to take anything away from memorization, but you'll find that What makes a scripture your favorite?

Because it has certain application to your life, right? And you didn't really have to memorize that, it was there. That's because the Spirit revealed it to your spirit. So you know, as the revelation of God comes to you, it comes to you spiritually and it doesn't require memory. Which I think is terrific, because my memory is bad.

So, back to the point at hand. Adam dies. What other deaths took place? Based on a little bit about what we talked about last week in terms of who Adam is. That's right. He took the whole race with him. He took the whole creation with him. Now did Adam die positionally? And we're going to talk about position and condition today. to God? Answer, yes. But conditionally, God could still communicate with him. But he was cut off positionally from God, no longer identified.

Is the man that God created, we'll put it this way, God created man after his own image and after his own likeness, right? When Adam sinned, did any of that image cross over? What do you think? Of course, that's probably a question only a guy like me would think about. When Adam sinned, well back up, when God created Adam, he created him in his own image and after his own likeness, right? Now when Adam sins, is any of that image retained?

Physically it was retained, but mentally it was altered. Altered. Adam picks up something new when he sins. What does he pick up? Self-guilt. guilt. What does he become? He gets a sin nature. And we're going to talk about natures and stuff later. But he gets this sin nature that's attached to his soul that gives him a propensity to sin. You know, I use this example a lot, but when John was born and as he started to grow up, we didn't have to send him to sinning academy. Why not? Because he was a master. Yeah, it came with the package.

The propensity to sin is something that Adam got, and when he took the whole race into the fall, we all got it. The word says is that Adam became flesh, and that's the term that the Word of God uses. The scripture that I used to indicate that the head of the human race took all humanity into the position of death is 1 Corinthians 15, 22. In Adam, all die.

Now, I want to mention something here. For the next several weeks, The focus of our identification is going to be on Adam. We're not going to talk about our identification with Christ. I want us to get clear in our minds that before we are saved, we have an identification with Adam and all that he has to do with, and every human being on the planet comes with this package. There aren't any better or worse human beings. We're all identified with Adam in his fall, His flesh, his sin nature, bless you. So we're going to concentrate on that because we have a tendency sometimes to think, well, this person, I like this person better than that person and this person's got a better chance of being a believer than this one. Nonsense. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. In Adam, all die. All are dead. All of them. Okay?

Ephesians 2.3 says, All in Adam have his life, and are by nature the children of wrath.

Ephesians 2.3 So every human being that shows up on the planet by nature is a child of wrath. What's that mean? Now, go look in the nursery and come back here and tell me those people are all children of wrath.

Yeah, they are. Well, they are dead, they're born dead, and they're deserving of condemnation. Absolutely, they are. Okay? Adam became flesh by soul and spirit, hence the way spawned from Adam is flesh. In John 3, 6 the Lord Jesus said, that which is born of the flesh is flesh. It's what it is. Okay? All right?

Now, I'm surprised nobody's asked me the question about, how about those little babies that die? What's the Word of God say? I mean, that's the way they're conceived. Now, God can save them any way he wants because of the work of Christ on the cross. For me, you know, I'm restricted to believing how God deals with infants who, that's his business, but I'm convinced that the work of Christ on the cross is so complete that God can save them any way he wants. but they show up, they're conceived, and arrive on the planet this way.

Because they are identified, now listen to me, because they are identified with Adam. Okay? Identification truth. They're identified with Adam. You may be going here, but how does that relate to define their spirit at that point? I have a hard time distinguishing between that and the Holy Spirit power, and not somebody who hasn't believed. Right. Whether a human being is two years old or a hundred and two, their position is, I'm talking about non-believer now, is exactly the same.

They're from Adam, they're identified with Adam, and all that's true of Adam is true of them. They're dead to God, Their body is dying, even though at two years old it doesn't look that way. They're infested and infected with a sin nature. They have a propensity to sin. They're only flesh. And like we talked about last week, God's reaction to Adam's sin was that he looked over the world and what he saw was that man only did evil continually. That's all he did. He didn't do anything other than evil.

So that's the premise, and the premise is based on every human being coming from Adam. He's the federal head of the race. And so, last week we talked about this principle in Genesis called, like begets like, birds beget birds, and dogs beget dogs, and you know, there aren't any dog birds, you know. Well that same principle holds true in the spiritual realm. Adam, fleshly sinner, begets Adam, fleshly sinner, begets Adam, fleshly sinner. There isn't any break in the chain.

It's active, but it's dead to God. It's separated from God. It was designed specifically by God, by breathing into Adam, to have this thing called a spirit, a human spirit, in which he would communicate directly with God. But when he sinned, that was cut off. His spirit didn't cease to exist. It just doesn't have a connection with God, so it's dead to God. I like what Sparks says. He says that it's the direction in which it operates. When Adam sinned, the spirit died to God.

So subsequently, man the operation goes from the body to the soul, rather than from the spirit to the soul. I used my example up here last week of a bell jar. Everybody know what a bell jar is? If you ever took physics in high school, you've seen a bell jar. that inside the bell jar is body, soul, and spirit.

And the predominating influence is the spirit. And when Adam sins, the spirit deflates. Well, what rushes to fill the gap? The soul does. But now the soul is infected with this thing called flesh. And so the predominating influence and the driving force and the operating principle of the fleshly man is the sin nature.

See that? So the sin nature, that's why people can have soulish experiences and put spiritual tags on them. When they're not spiritual at all, they're soulish. See? Because they excite the emotions. See? Oh, that's got to be spiritual. No. No it doesn't. Well, that's got to be godly.

No. No. Because if you're totally dead to God, how do you know what's of God? How do you know? You don't know. That's why there's Buddhism, Islam, you know, Mormonism, you know, it's got the tag of spiritual, but if you study them, and don't do it too deeply, because they aren't worth it, they're soulish, they're not spiritual. Yeah, but if you believe strong enough, you'll notice that. Which is soulish, see? Yeah. So, soulish is being like more self-directed? Yeah, the soul being infected with the sin nature is totally self-focused.

It's never anything... The non-believer, no matter how philanthropic it looks, did it for itself. No matter how generous it appeared, it was for me. You know? And there shouldn't be any illusions about that. Could you also say that the soul responds to what's around it? Because of the environments in it? Yeah. I mean, think about it.

Adam is such a federal head, or such a complete head of the race, that when he falls, not only does he and Eve fall, but the creation around him falls. It all goes, you know, Romans 8 says that the whole creation has been subjected to vanity. Do you understand what that means? You know what the word, the biblical understanding of the word vanity is? Creation is combing their hair and looking nice. Vanity is an interesting word.

What it means is that the creation will never arrive at the perfection that it was created to do. That's what vanity means. In other words, if everything you see is in the process of dying, well God didn't create it that way. He created it to live. So, vanity means that nothing that you see will ever achieve what it was created to be. Bird's singing off, you know, flat keys or off keys or whatever. You understand what I'm saying? And so... Because of its direction. I'm sorry? Because of its direction. Its direction is... and it can't... it has no capacity to change its own direction. Do you see that? Unless God intervenes.

But Adam is such a complete head of the race that whatever happens to him accrues, in real estate and legal terms we have this little phrase at the end of contracts that says, it accrues to the benefits and the errors of the assigns. What that means is that if I sign a contract to do something and I die, they've got to fulfill it. When Adam signed the contract with God, He's got to fulfill it, and so does all his progeny. So when he falls, the whole thing goes down, including the creation. All of it. You know, all the plant life, all the animal life, even the rocks.

What helped me to understand was Genesis 5.3 when he says that, I think it's Seth was created in the image of Adam. Right. That's right. And when Cain was born, Eve said, oh, now I have a son, or a man. She thought he was going to be the Redeemer. She didn't recognize that he came from them, so he's just like them. You okay so far?

What I'm trying to do, we talk a lot about our identification with the resurrected, glorified Christ. What I'm trying to get clear over the next few weeks is that when human beings are conceived, their total identity is with Adam, in a fallen world, infested with sin, and your identification with him is permanent, unless something happens later in your life.

So for us to think we're any better than any other human being outside of Christ is ridiculous. Our whole identity is with Adam and all that's true of him. And it influences our viewpoint, our life, our actions, everything. The reason that's so critical is that when we start talking about our identification with Christ, those same principles are going to hold true. And that's why it's critical.

What's man's view? an estimate of his own fall. How does man perceive it? Did I give you the verses, Romans 121 through 23? You don't perceive that he's fallen. Well, it's interesting that, number one, man is so... his understanding is so darkened that he is not capable of giving an estimate, a true estimate, by himself. Somebody outside of him, namely God, has to give an estimate of how bad the fall is.

Romans 1.21 says, for even though they knew God, they knew he existed, they did not honor him as God, nor give thanks, but they became, and here's man's estimate, futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Now you wouldn't, if I came in here this morning and said, You guys are full of speculation and your foolish hearts are dark and you go to another class. But the natural man, that's who they are. Professing to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man of birds, four-footed animals and crawling creatures. So, within three verses, man goes from not honoring God to worshiping snakes. And notice how quickly it goes down. It goes from birds, four-footed creatures, and crawling creatures. Direction. Right? Okay.

Romans 2.14.

The Gentiles, who do not have a law, do instinctively the things of the law. These, not having the law, are a law unto themselves, in that they show the works of the law written in their hearts. Point being is that Man has this set of principles in his conscience.

You know, as a result of what tree did Adam eat from? The knowledge of good and evil. So what's the makeup? Good and evil. Is not your whole code of your life based on good and evil? Is it not? I mean, don't we raise kids based on good and evil? Don't we send them to school based on good and evil? Doesn't the government function based on good and evil? Everything is based on good and evil.

You know what? That's fine for this creation. But trust me, when we get to the new creation, good and evil is not the criteria anymore. Big problem in Christianity is that they're trying to Christianize good and evil. Did Adam know what good was? That's right.

He didn't know. There was no contrast. He didn't know what evil was. He didn't know what good was either. We seem to think he did. As long as he stayed good, he would have been fine. No, he wasn't good. He wasn't evil either. He was innocent. He had to eat of both trees. What's that? He would have had to have eaten of both trees. The other tree wouldn't have saved him though. Because of his becoming flesh, if he had eaten of the other tree, it would have polluted it.

And then Romans 2.17 talks about the Jews who think they have a leg up because they have the mosaic wall, but they don't.

Let's talk a bit about position and condition. Define position. Everybody here been to some degree exposed to position and condition at some point? What's position mean? That's good. Okay. A point of origin, a procurement beginning, one that originates the point of origin? Yeah.

Now, I'm going to re-emphasize, I'm only talking here about our position in Adam. Okay? We have, every human being shows up here with a position in Adam. If I were to ask you, what one word would you use to describe your position, what word would you use? Think about it now. Any position, either position, doesn't matter. The word is the same. In. Close. Anybody else? Saved.

How about the word source? Are you with me? Position means source. If my position in Adam, if I have a position in Adam, He's the source of everything that I am. If I have a position in Christ, He is the source of everything that I am. So position really means source. All men are born in the position of Adam. He's their source. They are positioned exactly like him in body, soul, and spirit. Exactly. No difference. And Adam and Eve all die. By nature, they're children of wrath. And what's born of the flesh is flesh. Those same three verses. Do you see that? Have you ever met a human being that didn't come under this heading? I mean, you probably thought you didn't, but all the rest of them guys did. Right? This is what human beings are.

That's why psychology works so good. Show me where it worked. Oh, it tells you a lot about the first atom. Yeah, psychology is a science that studies the sin nature. Isn't that right? And tries to get the sin nature to arrive at some sort of rest. Justification. Yeah. Justification. Tries to do something about sin. But it doesn't tell you how to get free from it? Sure it does. Well, it doesn't tell you, but it gives you drugs so you don't care.

My next question was, is positional truth reality? Answer, yeah. In our human birth, we're a product of our position. We're born an atom. That's the reality. No human being ever, except for one, showed up on this planet that wasn't born in Adam. Every single one of them was. That was the reality of who they were.

Do you see that? Okay. I agree. I agree. totally futile, but also in Christ. You need to know your position in Christ before your condition is manifested. So in both cases, positional goes before conditional. Yeah, I mean, you think about that. Adam is so corrupt and so evil that one of the jobs of Satan is to blind mankind about who he really is. You see that? And one of the problems with leaving this planet without Christ is that all of a sudden you see who you are. You know?

And at the Great White Throne Judgment, haven't you often wondered, well, how can all these billions of people come before Christ in all His glory, and not one of them will say to Him, oh, you know, I wish I could change my mind? Don't you hold out hope that that's going to happen? Not one of them is going to say that. Because of their position in Adam, and the sin nature, they're going to look at the glorified Christ and say, I didn't want you then, I don't want you now, where's the door to hell?"

It's really tough for us to grab a hold of that, but that's what our position in Adam gives us. Total separation from God willingly, you know? No regrets. We regret it if things are tough, but no regrets when faced with the objective truth without any deception. One of the jobs of the Holy Spirit in convicting a man of his sinfulness is to take that clout off of his mind and to show him who he really is and that he's condemned in sin and trespass, that he's a dog and he has no hope.

That's what he did to me. I saw, gee, I thought I was skating along pretty good here. Uh-oh. You know? I was a no-hoper. What does your condition mean then? Can you define that? Status quo, which is Latin for Domestique. Can your position ever change? No. If you're positioned in Adam, is that ever going to change? If you're positioned in Christ, how about your condition, does it change?

Yeah, boy, like quicksand. In 1 Corinthians 121, Paul asks, Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom, did not come to know God, God was well pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

But we preach, for indeed the Jews ask for a sign and the Greeks search for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, and we're going to spend a lot of time on that point, to the Jews a stumbling block to the Gentiles' foolishness, but those who are called, both Jew and Greek, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God, because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, The weakness of God is stronger than men.

Your condition fluctuates continually, yet we try and rely on our condition. We try and rely on our mind and our will and our feelings. We try to rely on the security that the world offers. There isn't any, but we don't know that. So your condition fluctuates moment by moment. You can't be trusted.

Your position never changes. Your position in Adam never changes. Your condition in Adam changes all the time. When Adam sinned, did he die positionally or conditionally? Both. That's exactly right. He died both. You might say that he died positionally the moment he sinned and he died conditionally 930 years later. So why are all men condemned? That's exactly right. Do you hear the answer? Because they're in Adam. Because their position and their identification is Adam. In Adam, all die. First Corinthians 15. Why are all men condemned?

Romans 5.12. Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, so death spread to all men because all sinned. Let me ask you a question here. Did Adam sin on your behalf? He was back there in the garden, he sinned, and God said, OK, I'm going to stick it on the rest of these guys. They weren't there, but I'm going to stick it on them anyway. Did Adam sin in your behalf? What do you think? How many think, yeah, he did? How many think, no, he didn't? Boy, what a bunch of chickens I have in this room. What do you think? We sinned. Let me quote a verse to you and tell me what you think about this.

In Hebrews 7, 9 and 10 it says, and so to speak, through Abraham, even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him." Understand what he's talking about here? Abraham meets Melchizedek on the way back from victory. And this Melchizedek is a unique guy. He's a priest. And Abraham pays tithes to Melchizedek.

And this verse says that Levi. Why Levi? Why is Levi important here? Because he is the Levitical priesthood. And we're talking about, in Hebrews here, two priesthoods. The priesthood of Melchizedek and the priesthood of Levi, right? And in Hebrews it says that Christ is a high priest after the order of Melchizedek, not Levi. And what the writer of Hebrews is trying to prove is that The priesthood of Melchizedek is superior to the priesthood of Levi, and the way he does it is he shows that Levi paid tithes to Melchizedek.

But he wasn't alive yet, so how did he do it? He did it in the loins of his father Abraham. Did you see that? So, in the loins of your father Adam, you sinned. You were there, You sinned in the garden. He didn't do it for you, you did it. That's how tight identification is. Do you see that? Now, how many think that's right? It is right.

Because Romans 5.12 says, Therefore, just as through one man, Adam, sin, and notice sin is singular there, and in the Greek it has a definite article in front of it, so it says, therefore just as one man, the sin entered, the sin nature entered into the world, and with it came death, right? Through sin, the sin nature, so death spread to all men, here's the reason why. Because all sinned.

When? When did you become a sinner? When Adam sinned. The first time you committed a sin isn't when you became a sinner. When you were conceived, you didn't become a sinner then. That was just the result. That's right. You became a sinner when Adam sinned. That's how closely identified with him you are. You alright with that?

Just as we were saved when Christ died on the cross. Well, and as we get into our new position in Christ, the same principles are going to hold true. And what's interesting about studying our identification with Christ is that there is so much of what's true of Christ that we look at it and think, well, it's true of Him, but it isn't true of me.

Nonsense. It's all true of me, too. Why? Because I'm in Him, just like I was in Adam. When a man believes on the person and work of Christ, does his position change? Or does he just add a little something on to himself? His source changes. Which means his position changes. If the definition of position is source, what changes? His position changes. Does he know that at that time? Probably not. Probably not. Romans 8, 1 says, therefore, There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are doing all this good stuff. No. To those who are in Christ Jesus. Position change. Source change.

2 Corinthians 5.17 Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is what? He is a new creation. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

Galatians 6.15, for neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.

Now, so, hopefully you're beginning to see as we build the case here, that Christ dying for your sins wasn't enough. Because if your position didn't change, so what if you're forgiven? Understand that? If your sins are forgiven but your position doesn't change, so what? You're just a condemned man who doesn't have to pay the penalty. You're still condemned because Adam is. So, is there a difference in your mind between what are called the birth truths and the growth truths?

And then I said, explain. How many think there is? One, two, three. How many of you think they're pretty much the same? How many chickens are there? There's a lot of them. You guys are cowards. You must all be an atom. Yeah, there's a huge difference between the birth truths and the growth truths. So, what are the so-called birth truths? And I gave you verses. I gave you more than you needed, actually. I can never hear the buzzers. Are we running over? We are over, aren't we? What time does the class stop? Like 5 to 10? So, all right, I'll quickly go through these.

The reason I put these in here was I want you to understand that when we get to the growth truths, these are foundational, but you can't grow on them. You can't grow unless this foundation is in place. First one is, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

For you have been born again, not of seed which is perishable, but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God. So the first thing of the birth truth is you've got to be born again. after the discussion this morning should make a lot more sense why born-again is a good term. Two is accepted in Christ to the praise and glory of his grace which he freely bestowed on us in the beloved. A birth truth is that I am totally accepted before God. There's no doubt about that. That's a birth truth.

The third thing is I'm eternally secure in Christ. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
